Shooting a silhouette shot like this is something I have wanted to do for a while. I wanted to do a shot with a figure doing tai chi in a sunrise/sunset setting. I love the 1000toys Synthetic Humans, and this was really the only figure I have with the articulation needed to achieve this pose.
The lighting for this setup was pretty minimal. I used an LED strip light at the bottom of the base of the backdrop, and I used two TaoTronics desk lamps at 50% brightness pointed at the backdrop. This gave me the light I needed to illuminate the backdrop and create the silhouette effect since there was no direct light pointed at the figure.
For the rest of the setup, I balanced the figure on one leg (which was a pain trying to get him to stay) on one of my Tamashii Nations rocks, and I used some artificial grass for the grass in the background. I originally had the moss mat that everything is sitting on directly on my table, but the LED strip light in the back was coming through the grass. I have a 12x12 shelf that I use for a black base for other shots, so I just used that the raise everything up and completely hide the strip light.
I have a black and white variant of this shot as well. I like the way the black and white shot looks, but I liked the one with the pink back drop better. The pink back drop really helps give that sunrise/sunset vibe to the overall shot.
