It really seemed like for a while there we weren't going to get this Stan Lee action figure. I was excited about this figure when the first images leaked of him being a build-a-figure in the MCU figure two packs, but was definitely disappointed when this was scrapped. Luckily the figure did see the light of day when he was announced as a single carded figure last year. I preordered him as soon as I was able to, and waited months for him to arrive.
This portrait shot was pretty simple, but a pain at the same time. I wanted just a relaxed shot of Stan sitting on a stool with a cutout using one of his common phrases. I setup a simple three point lighting scheme with my two LumeCube panel minis and one of my TaoTronics desk lamps.
The cutout was where all of my frustration came from with this shot. I made the cutout in photoshop, and then I printed it, glued it to a piece of cardboard, and then cut it out. After it was cutout I ran over the edges with a sharpie like I usually do to blackout the edges. It really was a pain trying to get the cutout positioned right. I used some sticky tack and a black twist tie to connect the cutout to his head. I kept struggling with the position and it kept leaning out of place, but eventually I got it to work after several attempts.
I'm really happy with the results of this shot, and I am very happy that we finally have an action figure of Stan the Man! It truly is one of the best ways to immortalize the man who brought us so many great characters.
