First and foremost, I hope everyone is having a happy and safe memorial day in these crazy times. The unofficial start to summer is a little different this year in the midst of this global pandemic.
For this shot, I wanted to do something simple and stoic with the Mezco One:12 Captain America (which I haven't used a lot) for Memorial Day. The detail and soft goods on the One:12 figures really give you that realism look when taking photographs, and that is my favorite part of these figures. It really makes them worth the price point in my opinion.
I went with a white backdrop for this shot to really bring out the colors of the flag and Captain America. It can be tough trying to get the background lit to have that all white look, and I had to make several adjustments while shooting this to eliminate any spots that appeared a little dark. I used two LumeCubes on full brightness and a LED strip light at the bottom to light the background. In the beginning I was struggling with glare from the lights on Cap's shield, so I used a piece of craft foam to reflect the light with a desk lamp, and that helped get rid of the glare on the shield.
As for the rest of the shot, I believe I bought the flag from Michael's sometime last year for another shot I did. I've really enjoyed the Tamashii Nations rocks that I have picked up recently, and went with those again in the foreground. They really help with a shot like this, because I simply placed Cap on my table, and then put the rocks in front of him to hid the surface of the table. Sometimes you can get great results with the simplest setups.
Finally, I also have a black and white variant of this shot. I really like the black and white here, because Captain America is obviously someone who has lived across multiple generations. This version makes for a nice WW2 shot.
